Treating Constipation

I'm only 22 but have been suffering with constipation since I was 14, I would sometimes go 7-10 days without even one bowel movement! which becomes very scary. I've tried medications as well as taking colon cleanses, Metamucil, bowel buddies, flax seed the list goes on. I got very desperate and decided to finally see a Naturopathic doctor, after going over everything I eat, how active I am, and supplements I take he told me he wanted me to stop taking calcium supplements and start taking magnesium, about 400-600mg a day, I had never really heard of magnesium and had no idea what its purpose was. It has now been 2 months since I started taking it everyday and I have been regular ever since, never missing a day, apparently a lot of people are deficient in magnesium and it has over 300 functions in the human body! including helping your muscle to contract which was why my bowels were not moving. Just wanted to get this information out there in case there's anyone with the same problem. Also magnesium is very safe it doesn't act like a laxative so there's no risk of your bowels becoming dependent on it.
