Standard Arthritis Treatments

The types of treatments used for arthritis will vary from one type of arthritis to another. Other factors come into play as well, such as the lifestyle of the person affected, the severity of their symptoms, and how they've responded to other treatment attempts.

For the most common types of arthritis though, even modern doctors recommend lifestyle changes to help with the symptoms. Most types of arthritis aren't considered curable, but it is possible to slow down the affects of the disease. There are also a variety of things that can be done to help relieve the symptoms too.

Obesity for instance, is quickly becoming the number one cause of Osteoarthritis. The excess weight that many people carry on their bodies these days puts too much strain and stress on the joints, and this causes injuries which can lead to Osteoarthritis. So one of the first recommendations doctors will give you is to start losing weight. Even reducing body weight by ten or fifteen pounds can make a big difference in the amount of pain experienced from Osteoarthritis, and most other forms as well.

Many doctors will also recommend a change in diet for arthritis patients. The stated reasons for this are because eating more fresh fruits and vegetables will help you lose weight more easily. Many believe however, that vitamin and nutrition deficiencies contribute to the development of various forms of arthritis though, so boosting your everyday nutrition intake can help slow down the progressive degeneration of the joints and tissues.

When arthritis is caused by bacteria and infections of course though, doctors will usually prescribe antibiotics and anti-fungal medications.

Other treatments involve helping patients to deal with or reduce the symptoms cause by arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis for instance, will be at it's worst after a person has been still for long periods of time, such as at nighttime when sleeping. Getting up and moving around actually start reducing the pain and stiffness, so doctors often recommend arthritis patients get low impact exercise.

Exercise also helps make the joint tissues and muscles stronger, which can delay the degenerative affects of the disease as well. Low impact exercises such as walking and swimming are usually recommended.

Other treatments include the use of NSAID medications, which help reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. Sometimes a type of steroids are used by injection at the joint which is affected. In some cases, fluid can be drained from the affected joint, or surgerys can be performed too.
