Schisandra Benefits

The Schisandra benefits, Schisandra chinensis, may not evident when looking at this common garden shrub, a type of Magnolia vine. Native to Eastern Asia, the Chinese have used the berries of the Schisandra plant for their calming benefits, as well as for the ability to increase stamina, concentration and focus. Strangely, it is used as both a stimulant and a calming agent.

The Chinese still prescribe it for things such as:

  • sleeping problems
  • sleep that is disturbed by dreams
  • increasing stamina
  • bringing blood sugar to acceptable levels
  • increasing of concentration and focus
  • treatment of mild depression
  • irritability
  • forgetfulness
  • strengthens and tones kidney and liver function
  • alleviates night sweats
  • night urination
  • hives
  • eczema

Research has been done on animals with Schisandra and there is strong evidence suggesting that it has properties that protect against skin cancer.

Other traditional uses of Schisandra include:

  • The use of antioxidant properties to boost the body
  • Increase of immune system function
  • Assists in increasing the ease of breathing and aids the respiratory system
  • Aphrodisiac properties and the increase of sex drive
  • A boost of energy and rejuvenation of the mind
  • A remedy for exhaustion and extreme fatigue

  • Increased lung and liver function
  • Coughs, colds, sore throats and allergies
  • Increase the ability to remember
  • Vision that has been impaired can be improved
  • Circulation and blood pressure
  • Quicker healing after surgery and procedures

While the benefits of Schisandra have been proven, there are some instances when you should avoid the herb:

  • during pregnancy
  • if you suffer from high blood pressure
  • if you have epilepsy
