Maca - fertility herbs and contraception - is it safe?

I have been recommended by a friend to take Maca - a Peruvian herb that acts as an adaptagen - for a range of problems including thinning hair and low energy (I currently already take b6, fish oils and iron for these, but without much result).

However, I have read that Maca also increases fertility as it has a regulating effect on the body's hormones.

I currently have a mirena (progesterone) coil and do not want to get pregnant, but would like to take Maca for its other benefits.

Does anyone know whether taking herbs that balance hormones/increase fertility can have a detrimental effect if you are using hormonal-based contraception?

Thanks

Thanks, I already take quite a dish of supplements, which I why I thought maca might be worth a try for its all round benefits. I think the hormonal contraceptive is unbalancing my system, so will get rid of that and see how things go, maybe the maca will help my body readjust. Thanks.

Maca like a number of other herbs imported to the USA doesn't have the FDA stamp of approval so you can usually only find it in a far less quality (powder), so it potency should be safe and not feared. Still, I'm not sure this is the best herb for the situation/condition you're facing. Perhaps you should seek herbal compounds rather than single herbs. Understand, while herbs do work, a better mentality when taking them is consider then as a balanced dish as you would a rounded meal with items that compliment each other. Think of sitting down for dinner with just corn everyday. Balance your herbal intake with one or more as a base and others that compliment the organs in question for potentially a higher end projected or desired effect.
