Identify Yellow Dock
Rumex crispusThis is a wonderful herb for kids to learn to identify. The leaves contain certain compounds that soothe the pain of bug bites, bee stings and even the rash caused by stinging nettle. In fact, dock usually grows near nettle. The leaves are rather oval shaped with pointed tips and have a rusted look. The plant can grow up to 5 feet tall with reddish flowers and seeds.
If you're ever out in the woods and get stung by nettle, or get any type of insect bite try crushing up a few dock leaves and rubbing them on the affected area.
This information has come in handy for both my daughters. They occasionally come to me with a story of how they, or a playmate, got some type of sting and how they remedied it with some dock leaves.
