Identify Yellow Dock
Rumex crispusThis is a wonderful herb for kids to learn to identify. The leaves contain certain compounds that soothe the pain of insect bites , bee stings and even the rash caused by stinging nettle. In fact, dock usually grows near nettle. The leaves are rather oval shaped with pointed tips and have a rusted look. The plant can grow up to 5 feet tall with reddish flowers and seeds.
If you're ever out in the woods and get stung by nettle, or get any type of insect bite try crushing up a few dock leaves and rubbing them on the affected area.
This information has come in handy for both my daughters. They occasionally come to me with a story of how they, or a playmate, got some type of sting and how they remedied it with some dock leaves.
