Holy Basil

Holy Basil Ocimum sanctum (Mint Family)

Origin

Holy Basil is a many branched, aromatic herb growing up to 4' tall with smooth soft leaves. The herb is bitter and pungent.

Native to India, the plant grows abundantly in Suriname. It reached the west sometime in the 16th century and now grows abundantly throughout the world.

This is an Ayurvedic herb with medicinal and spiritual significance in India.

In aryuvedic tradition this herb is regarded as sacred and is even said to assist in attaining higher consciousness. It is gaining popularity in the west as studies show the many important health benefits of this herb.

Health Benefits

Current research, both in animals and humans, supports the use of this herb in treating inflammation, digestive disorders, diabetes, headaches, heart diseases and infection. It also protected against mercury toxicity in mice and offered chemoprotection against chemically induced fibrosarcoma in an animal model.

Daily usage may help lower cortisol levels which helps lower blood sugar levels and protects the system from stress.

It may also benefit the immune system by increasing the number and activity of neutrophil cells, which are normally decreased by stress.

This herb also has antimicrobial properties useful in the topical treatment of ringworm.

It is generally regarded as safe, even for children. Some studies show that this herb may low fertility in some cases and therefore should be used with care by those trying to conceive.
