Herbs for Cuts and Scrapes

Herbs for Cuts and Scrapes

As part of the list of essential herbs to keep on hand in a medicine chest at home, we can't forget to include the ones that might seem a little miscellaneous or unimportant. There are a variety of herbs which are quite handy to have around for any number of reasons though, so we'll cover some of those here.

One of the number one herbs you should try to always have on hand is called comfrey. Comfrey is a regenerative herb. This means it helps your body grow new skin and cells very quickly. In fact, this herb can often be used in salve or poultice form, to heal bad cuts, scrapes and other wounds literally almost overnight. This herb is also excellent to use in poultices designed to help heal broken bones faster, and it will help heal torn ligaments and tendons when used in poultices for that as well.

Another excellent and popular herb that's well known is Aloe Vera. This can be used for a variety of needs including sunburns, scrapes, cuts and other wounds. Many people don't realize that aloe vera can also be used to help other medicinal herbs penetrate the skin too though. One of the biggest strengths of this herb is its ability to penetrate all layers of the skin. So when it's mixed with another healing or antibiotic herb for instance, it can help carry the healing and infection fighting power of that herb underneath the layers of the skin, and fully penetrate the areas the medicines are needed most.

It's this same property that makes it potentially hazardous when used wrong though. Many people buy aloe vera in the form of beauty products. Sunburn lotion is a common mistake many people make. They buy a product which says it is made with aloe vera, but they don't read the label and see that the product also contains perfumes, alcohols, and other chemicals which could be harmful to the body. And when they put it onto their skin, the aloe vera helps take all those harmful chemicals deeper into the body, and this can potentially cause many severe health issues over time.

Slippery Elm is another useful herb you might want to consider keeping on hand as much as possible. Slippery elm is a natural food source that can be used in times of famine or fasting, and it's also an excellent remedy to use for either diarrhea or constipation. Slippery elm is also used in combination with other herbs for poultices though, because it has a gel like property which helps hold all the herbs and liquids together better.
