Low income drug programs
by: Anonymous

You may try the drug company and see if they have a low income program for the preferred medication.

I know that seroquel and AstraZenica (the drug company)do. If I I had to pay for mine, well over 600.00 per month- Thanks God they do this

If they don't offer a program , you may want to try the seroquel. It has worked really well for me, I am almost normal ( what is that? lol)

Other than that, I have used Valerian Root and Melatonin.

Good Luck and Bless you for thinking of your family first.

Seraquel
by: Anonymous

It takes a while for the medication to not make you sleep all day. According to your dose it may only take a week. I have been on seraquel for over a year and am doing better than I have for my whole life.

It's well worth dealing with the groggyness and drugged feeling but that will dissipate in time hang in there:)

Once you're stabilized is the time to seek out what will help naturally, in the meantime get stable :)

bipolar, severe migraines, depression and insomnia looking for something ALL natural!
by: Anonymous

I am 29 years old and I suffer from bipolar disorder, severe migraines and depression and in the past three years since my desperation led me to actually take prescribed meds, it has actually gotten much worse. I am looking for a natural cure. I know that the man made medications don't help it just causes more problems and it has definitely made my life worse. I am dealing with the manic and the depression all at once right now along with excruciating daily pain from my migraines. Taking the antidepressants never seems to help, at least not for too long and I have been on so many pain meds that I have run out of new options same as with the antidepressants and anti anxiety meds. Some don't work at all some actually make it worse and some work for a while then turn on me and actually make me suicidal. And for the pain meds, I become tolerant of them and have to have a higher dose and then change to a different kind. I try to go off them completely every once in a while and try to live with the pain because I hate taking them and I know they alter my brain chemistry as well which makes my bipolar symptoms worsen and my depression and anxiety. So then I go through withdrawal then suffer with no pain meds as long as I can stand it just to go right back on them and start the vicious cycle all over again. Same as when the antidepressants either fail me or turn on me. I have to go off them and then back on them and wait for the new ones to build up in my system just to see if this kind will work or not and unfortunately, I have extremely low blood pressure so anything with beta blockers in them are out of the question which we all know for people with my medical conditions makes your options of meds even few and far between. I am just desperately seeking a natural answer. I believe that is the only way to get any kind of a life back. Help!

Natural Treatment Works Better than Prescription Drugs
by: Anonymous

I started my boyfriend on the herbal blend suggested on this page ( Vitamin C, L-Tyrosine, St. John's Wort and Ginko Extract)and it was a night and day difference!!! I am sooo thankful that I found this natural remedy. I did not want him to go back on anti-depressents because he becomes unemotional and very withdrawn. I have even noticed that it helps him concentrate and focus better.

Definitely look into talk therapy. Am struggling with Bipolar and I have been off and on many meds with little to no improvement. But talk therapy and CBT in general might help him reorganize his thinking at least.

Good luck.

Bipolar and Severe Depression
by: klh in tx

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about a year ago. My doctor, after many conversations and evaluations, believes I showed signs as young as 5 or 6 though. I have had severe depression problems since early childhood as well. There is a family history of similar mental illness on both sides of my family. I have always suffered from extreme low self esteem. I have also suffered extensive physical, verbal, mental and sexual abuse in past relationships and have a poor relationship with my family. I have attempted suicide multiple times in the past. To say the least, I have a lot of emotional baggage that I carry. I am recently married to a wonderful man that is very patient with my internal turmoil, and with his help, I heal a little more everyday. I was on abilify, which helped very much, but became to expensive to continue on. I currently take 5htp. It helps, but not enough sometimes. I still have emotional lows and cannot handle stress or khaoticness very well at all. If anyone has a suggestion on a natural type medicine, I would be extremely grateful.

Natural Vitamins for BP that do Work
by: Anonymous

I have a spouse and daughter with Bipolar, and highly recommend the following vitamins:
Oxidation in the brain can throw your brain?s processes off. 200 mg Vitamin C can protect your brain cells from oxidation that can cause dysfunctionˇ

40 mg Ginkgo Extract works better than most prescription drugs and is an all-natural herb that can help boost your moodˇ

If you can balance out brain chemistry, you can make significant progress against bipolar disorder. 250 mg L-Tyrosine will restore natural and balanced brain chemistry.

What Vitaganic?s Advanced Formula for Bipolar Disorder Can Do For You:

Balance Out Highs and Lows: It?s impossible to live your life if you?re moods are unpredictable. Fortunately, by enhancing your immune system naturally, you?re body can help you get back to the middle ground that you need.

Boost Brain: It?s thought that bipolar disorder is caused by a serious imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Vitaganic?s Advanced Formula for Bipolar Disorder is effective at giving your brain the precursors it needs for neurotransmitter production.

Protect Cells: If your nerve cells are under constant assault, they can?t work properly. The powerful antioxidants in this formula are essential to shield your nervous system from undue harm.

How it Works:

Vitamin B Complex 50: A blend of essential vitamins that work as a natural tune up to your nervous system. Vitamin B Complex 50 is a scientifically formulated blend of B vitamins that you won?t find anywhere else.

200mg Vitamin C: Established by research to be a potent antioxidant. This dosage of vitamin C can protect your brain cells from oxidation which can cause it to breakdown.

1: 40mg Ginkgo Extract: Shown in hundreds of research studies to boost brainpower and promote overall brain health.

2: 50mg ActivinŽ Grape Seed Extract and 100mg Green Tea Extract: A pair of natural antioxidants that quickly improve the health of your entire body.

3: 100mg St. John?s Wort Extract: An ancient herb that?s now backed by clinical research to help people get a sense of stability in regards to their moods.

4: 250mg L-Tyrosine: The underlying cause of bipolar disorder is an imbalance of neurotransmitters. When these are out of whack, it can cause unexpected and severe mood swings. L-Tyrosine helps your body make the neurotransmitters that are essential for a balanced brain.

Herbals?
by: Tommy

I heard of Passionflower and Damiana as being good bipolar relievers. They got rid of my depression and I'd like to try maybe one of them for my aunties bipolar. Would that be ok?? Or should I just stick to the chamomile, valerian and st johns wort?
Thanks :D

Bi Polar and ADHD
by: Anonymous

I to have a BF that has been diagnosed with both of these since childhood and is currently 22 years old. Want to find some natural herbal way to help control these and not by means of illegal substances such as marijuana either. I heard chamomile and lavender are both common for both of these but would like more insight.

Thank you in advance!!!

Bipolar, ADHD, Pain management
by: Anonymous

Any one with any of these things understand its a constant battle. My boyfriend has all 3. He was hit by a car at age 9. He was ruled dead twice. Because of that he has many problems. Including pinched nerves in neck and back, shifted hips at the time bruised kidneys and a revers carve to his spine. He also fell 13 ft off a ladder on to a cement floor in 2005. He broke his leg. He has many issues with pain because of that. Already having 2 surgeries on this knee. Also dealing with the bipolar and the ADHD. And the problems that come with both of those. Depression, mood swings, large amounts of mental pain just to name a few. The price of meds is just crazy! And what the pills do to your body is even worse some times. I should add my boyfriend is only 23 years old.

My goal is to find something herbal to help him with these (any of) issues. Taken pills that don't work, make your sick and cost hundreds isn't working. The bipolar is causing him to lose almost all hope at times. He has attempted suicide at few times. He is extremely hard working (60+ hours a week) most people who have his problems don't do that.

If any one has any ideas to help I'm open for anything. I'm just begging for help.

Wanting to Get Pregnant
by: Anonymous

When I was 14, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder but was never told until I was 20 years old. My fiance and I are getting married in four months and my doctor said that I shouldn't be on any mood stabilizers if I intend on getting pregnant any time soon. I was wondering if there was anything that I could possibly substitute for while I try and get pregnant and then when I am pregnant? Thanks :)

Valerian Root for Focus
by: Anonymous

I have found that 2 capsules of Valerian root nightly help me stay focused throughout the day. I also take 400 mg seraquel, but the added Valerian root helps tremendously.

If I really head for a manic episode throughout the day, I will again take 2 capsules and it seems to slow me down enough to at least function.

Good Luck:)

Things I Have Tried
by: Anonymous

I worked at a health food store for a few years and personally dealt with both manic and depressive phases while employed there. Thank god for the employee discount.

Mania: To help alleviate stress, and prevent inappropriate reactions, I pretty much took the same herbs used to help with sleep. Valerian root seemed to have mild sedentary affects that helped me get through the day. Melatonin was a great supplement to help me sleep at night. 3mg time-released melatonins are best.

Depression: 5-htp and St. John's Wort worked the best for my depression. Just make sure you wean off if you start racing high again.

For maintenance, high intake levels of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil, flaxseed oil) have often been shown to substantially alleviate drastic mood swings, especially when in conjunction with meds. Extra B-12 supplementation may also benefit the nervous system, possibly helping control ups and downs.

Herbal Remedies for BiPolar Disorder
by: Anonymous

Try eliminating all chemical preservatives, colors, etc in foods. Eliminate sugar and processed foods, alcohol. Lots of fruits and veggies, and most important, amino acids (from which the brain neurotransmitters are made)

Also, support the thyroid with iodine, as in sea vegetables (kelp, dulce) and zinc may help.
