Colloidal Silver and Eye Infections

First of all, I've never put much stock in herbal or home remedies. Most seem to be either the product of simple common sense or just nonsense. My story begins about 14 years ago when I got my first major case of pink eye or conjunctivitis. I am almost certain I picked up the infection at work and suffered for 5-7 days with every symptom in the book (itchy, scratch, goop filled eyes, pain, sensitivity to light, etc.). Since that time, I have suffered from chronic eye infections 2-3 times a year with the worst infection coming every spring. These infections seem to be brought on, typically, by over-exposure to the sun or wind or kicked off by a mild cold or sinus infection or just allergies. Over the last 13 years I've visited five different doctors, including an eye specialist and have been given at least six different prescription eye-drops and salves. None of these prescriptions seemed to have any affect on my eye infections, which, as typical, would last for 5-7 days before slowly subsiding. I had gotten to the point where I accepted the fact that 3-4 weeks out of every year I simply had to suffer.
Last summer, around August, I could feel the early stages of yet another eye infection coming on. They always start with mild, persistent irritation and seem to incubate over 2-3 days before developing into pure misery. My wife recalled that a friend of hers had give her a bottle of something called colloidal silver and suggested I put 2-3 drops in my eyes 2-3 times a day the next time I get an eye infection. With nothing to lose I gave it a shot and to my amazement the eye infection cleared up in less than a day. Three months later I used the remaining liquid in the bottle to fend off yet another eye infection.
Despite the success, I still wasn't 100% convinced the stuff really worked. After all, eye infections in the fall and winter came and went in varying degrees of severity. I knew the real test would come in the spring. And so, two weekend ago (first week of May), I was white water rafting in Tennessee. That evening I knew the wind and sun had done a number on my eyes and I could feel an infection coming on. I did not have my bottle of colloidal silver with me and ended up having to suffer for almost three days before getting home. By the time I got home, my eyes were swollen, itching mercilessly, and thick, yellow drainage was pouring out of both eyes. I began using the silver on cotton balls to clean out my eyes and putting 2-3 drops in each eye every 3-4 hours. Typically, one of these infections lasts at least five full days (I was on day one). The colloidal silver cleared up what I would consider a major eye infection in a single day. By Tuesday both eyes were almost 90% healed and by Wednesday morning I considered myself eye infection free.
I am now convinced that colloidal silver, whatever it does, is my miracle cure when it comes to eye infections. I've done exhaustive research on the internet and was surprised to find most physicians skeptical if not downright hostile to the suggestion that colloidal silver could cure or prevent what an entire host of pharmaceuticals could not. I've tried at least two different brands (Silver Shield and Sovereign Silver), both seem to work fine.
It makes me wonder what other simple remedies my doctor is not telling me about.
