Asperger's Syndrome

What is Asperger's Syndrome?

Asperger's syndrome (ASD) is a neurobiological developmental disorder. It is one of a distinct group of neurological conditions known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD ischaracterized by impaired language and communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior. Other ASDs include: Rett syndrome, autism, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorders (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Unlike children with autism, children with ASD retain their early language skills.

A distinguishing symptom of ASD is a child's obsessive interest in a single object or topic to the exclusion of any other. Children with ASD usually become obsessed with a particular topic of interest. They generally will talk exclusively about this topic in conversations. They often appear very authoritative due to formal speech patterns, high vocabulary and intense amounts of knowledge on their particular subject. Other characteristics of ASD include ritualistic tendencies, repetitive routines and peculiarities in speech and language. There may difficulty interacting with peers and trouble with social situations in general, as well as coordination problems.

Due to narrow interests and difficulties with social interactions, children with ASD may become very isolated. These children usually have developmental delays in motor skills such as pedaling a bike, catching a ball, or climbing outdoor play equipment. They may have severe coordination difficultiesand display a stilted walk.

Is there any treatment?

The ideal treatment for ASD coordinates therapies that address the main symptoms of the disorder: impaired communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and coordination difficulties. Most professionals agree that early treatment of these symptoms yields the best results.

Important components of a successful program include building on the child's interests, providing a predictable schedule, teaching tasks as a series of simple steps, and engaging the child's attention in highly structured activities. It may also include social skills training, cognitive behavioral therapy, and changes in diet. Anecdotal evidence suggests that children with ASD show an increase in severity of symptoms after eating highly processed foods containing dyes and preservatives. Some also report problems with wheat and gluten.
