Herbal remedies are unregulated and as such, they are not proven safe or effective. While anecdotal accounts of successes make for good reading, they are not backed with controlled and scientifically valid trials to support the many claims. It is perfectly legal for the companies selling these products to make claims that are blatantly false. Even if there is a useful ingredient in a plant, it often needs to be purified in order to avoid toxicities or hypersensitivites, or to provide dosage accuracy. There is real danger in using herbs without knowing how they may interact with other products, medicines, feeds, etc., or whether they are contraindicated in horses with various common conditions like ulcers, kidney or liver impairment, insulin resistance, etc. Regulated products have been tested and can provide this kind information. The companies profiting from sales of herbal products haven’t invested the time and money it takes to go through FDA research protocol to gain approval, so it is buyer beware if you use them. Some products sold as supplements have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals, harmful soil bacteria, and to contain variations in amounts of active ingredients listed on their labels.
