Aloe Vera Plant

The Aloe Vera plant is a succulent plant that originally came from Africa. It was taken to the West Indies in the 16th century, where it was first cultivated on a large scale by the local farmers. It is now one of the most common herbal remedies and is the sixth most used plant worldwide.

Appearance

The Aloe Vera plant usually grows to be between 12 and 16 inches high and has thick, fleshy leaves that are a green or grey-green color and have a serrated edge. The flowers are bright red or yellow and appear on a spike that can reach to be over three feet tall.

The parts of the Aloe plant can be described in many ways:

Use

Aloe is grown and in use around the world. It is very useful for the treatment of many different conditions, and it is an active ingredient in many herbal and conventional remedies, shampoos and soaps. Aloe Vera is known to help with the treatment of the following conditions:

The magic part of the Aloe plant is the bioactive components that are called chromones. These make it great for use in medicines and other remedies. It is also one of the only plants to contain vitamin B12 naturally.

Pregnant or nursing ladies should check that they can take Aloe products. Not all of the Aloe products are suitable for them.

Historic Use

People have used Aloe for its medicinal properties for many thousands of years. The ancient Chinese, Greek and Roman civilizations all treated battle wounds with the gel, and in India Aloe gel has a traditional use as a cooling tonic.

Preparation

The thick and mucilaginous gel that comes from the Aloe plant is the most common part that is in use. It is less common to make use of the leaves, but they are in use for their purgative properties and as an aid to digestion. The leaves can also be crushed to make a yellow juice that can be used to help treat constipation.

Growing

The Aloe Vera plant is really easy to grow indoors so you can enjoy growing it and make good use of its curative properties for yourself. You can also grow it outdoors if your garden has a sunny area with good drainage and you live somewhere where the temperature does not drop too low in winter. A good way to grow Aloe is to grow it in a pot on the patio in summer and move it inside for the winter.

The Aloe Vera plant is one of the great miracles of the plant world. It is an effective treatment for many ailments and injuries that can easily be grown both indoors and out.
