This herb is one of the most beneficial herbs to stop all types of bleeding, including internal bleeding in the organs. It's used to slow excessive menstrual bleeding as well. It is an anti-inflammatory and diuretic and some studies show it may help lower blood pressure.

Shepherd's Purse has been used traditionally in childbirth.

Midwives sometimes use a few drops of this tincture under the tongue to control excessive postpartum bleeding.

Shepherd's purse contains a protein that acts in the same way in the body as the hormone oxytocin, constricting the smooth muscles that support and surround blood vessels, especially those in the uterus.

Other chemicals in the herb may accelerate clotting and help the uterus contact, explaining the long-time use of the herb to help the womb return to normal size after childbirth.

Shepherd's purse is also a mild diuretic, providing potassium to replace the potassium lost through increased urination.

Aerial parts are used as tinctures, teas and poultices.

Crushed seedpods are used for making tea.

CAUTIONS: In pregnancy this herb should be used only at full term.

Use of shepherd's purse to treat spotting during pregnancy is not recommended, since the herb can cause uterine contraction.
