A mastitis infection is caused by bacteria which enter the breast through small wounds in the nipples which causes inflammation, heat, swelling, redness and great tenderness of the affected breast. Note from editor: I have had great success clearing this painful condition by taking 2 dropperfuls of echinacea tincture every 2 hours until relief is felt and then every 4 hours for another 24 hours.
