Herbal Remedies for Colic

Colic can be very trying for the whole family.

There are many thoughts on what causes these symptoms ~ but no one really knows for sure.

The digestive tract of a newborn takes several months to mature and regulate. During this time some babies show signs of colic - which is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms such as persistent crying - especially after feeding, signs of flatulence or trapped gas, pulling up of the legs and a generally'unsettled' baby.

Many people advise nursing mothers to avoid garlic, onions, cabbage family plants and all spicy foods. However, nursing mothers in Central and South America have a diet largely based on these foods and rarely have colicky babes.

It may be that food additives and preservativesare likelier culprits.

Try to avoid processed foods and caffeine while nursing.

Herbal Remedies for Colic

ANISE seed, CATNIP, Dill seed, & FENNEL seed tea are all good remedies for this condition due to their antispasmodic properties. Nursing mothers can make a tea of the crushed seeds or leaves and sip throughout the day. A diluted tea can be given to bottle fed babies.

Homeopathic Remedy for Colic

Note from editor: Newborn babies aren't yet capable of discharging their own energy. They're born expecting to be carried about by a busy mom, which allows for this discharge. Babies who spend a great deal of time lying down rather than in-arms, will often get fussy in the evenings due to pent up energy. If this is the case, try wearing baby in a sling or carrier throughout the day and see if this helps.

Also ~ I have had great success with rubbing a bit of warm ginger oil onto baby's tum after a bath.
